Abingdon, MD (September 12, 2023) – A crash involving two vehicles sent nearly a dozen victims to local hospitals with injuries on Monday morning, September 11.
At around 8:30 a.m., the Maryland State Police responded to the scene of an automobile accident that took place on Route 924, Emmorton Road.
According to reports, a KinderCare 15-passenger mini-bus and a second vehicle collided on the roadway near Bell air South Parkway. Investigations show that the bus was traveling north on the roadway while, at the same time, the second vehicle, identified as a Honda, was traveling south. The driver of the Honda attempted to make a left turn when it failed to yield the right-of-way to the bus, resulting in the two vehicles colliding.
Ten of the children on the bus were transported to the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake medical Center for emergency treatment of injuries. The driver of the Honda and their passenger, identified as a 1-year-old child, were both injured. The victims were transported to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, for medical care.
At this time, the incident is being investigated.
We hope all of the victims injured in this crash recover quickly.
Bus Accidents in Maryland
Each year, motor vehicle accidents leave tens of thousands of people in Maryland with injuries. Unfortunately, crashes that involve buses are more likely to have mass casualties than most other types of vehicles. People who are in buses are more vulnerable to suffering injuries due to the fact that they are often without seatbelts and thrown from their seats.
Many accidents that we see take place in our state are preventable. This is particularly true for accidents that take place at busy intersections. There are multiple factors that contribute to motor vehicle accidents taking place in intersections. Some of the most common include:
- Reckless driving
- Failure to yield the right of way
- Running red lights or stop signs
- Distracted driving
- Failure to signal when turning
