Hagerstown, MD (September 3, 2023) – A major multi-vehicle accident reported in the Hagerstown area claimed the lives of two people from New York.

At around 9:34 a.m. on September 1, emergency crews were dispatched to provide assistance at the scene of a major crash that occurred on Interstate 81.

According to officials, a six-vehicle wreck blocked the southbound lanes of the interstate near mile marker 10.

Authorities arrived at the scene and shut down the road by Showalter Road near the Hagerstown Regional Airport as they worked to clear the area.

Two people from New York were fatally injured and pronounced deceased as a result of the crash. Three other victims were injured in the accident and transported to local hospitals.

The incident prompted officials to close off the roadway for more than seven hours as they worked to clear the scene and investigate. These investigations are currently ongoing.
