Pedestrian Accidents in Maryland
Every year, around 3,000 people are injured in pedestrian accidents across the state of Maryland. These accidents account for around three percent of total traffic incidents that are reported in our state. Unfortunately, the severe nature of these accidents means that they account for around 23 percent of total statewide fatalities.
Pedestrians involved in accidents are often left with severe injuries that affect their lives forever. We see many victims left with severe compound fractures, spinal cord injuries, and even internal organ injuries due to these crashes. When large vehicles are involved, such as school buses, the severity of injuries can dramatically increase, forcing victims to undergo extensive medical treatment.
Unfortunately, many of the accidents that we see take place in our state each year are preventable. Quite often, they are a result of negligence. Leading factors in pedestrian accidents include:
- Disregarding stop signs at intersections
- Lane switching without signaling
- Running red lights
- Drunk driving
- Mobile phone usage while driving
- Failure to yield to pedestrians
