Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in Maryland
In Maryland, the number of pedestrian fatalities resulting from motor vehicle accidents exceeds 100 each year. Many of these incidents can be attributed to driver negligence, with excessive speeding being a common contributing factor. When drivers exceed the posted speed limit, their ability to stop in time to avoid a collision is significantly reduced.
In addition, a fair share of pedestrian accidents often occurs as a result of drivers who fail to yield the right of way. When pedestrians have the designated right to cross the road at crosswalks and other locations, and they are struck by vehicles, drivers who neglect to stop can be held responsible for striking pedestrians.
Finally, distracted driving contributes to these accidents at an alarming rate. Engaging in activities like using a cell phone, eating, or any other form of distraction while operating a vehicle significantly impairs a driver's ability to react and avoid collisions.
